​What is spray foam insulation?

Spray foam insulation (a.k.a. sprayed-in foam insulation) is a two-component liquid insulation material that insulates and air seals where it is applied.  The two component product is packaged in separate 55-gallon drums – a resin in one and an ISO in the other.  The liquids are kept separate until applied by an experienced spray foam insulation contractor.  The liquids are combined by traveling through individual tubes through a heated hose to the spray gun, where they merge to create the foam.   The spray foam expands within seconds of application, filling the applied cavities surface.   Expansion thickness depends on the type of spray-in foam insulation used.  Closed-cell foam insulation expands approximately 40 percent, while open-cell foam insulation expands by roughly 100.

Closed-cell spray-in insulation can be used in exterior continuous insulation applications and small interior applications that require the highest R-value to meet building codes.
